Our Mission

The URS Club, Inc. exists to assist individuals and groups to carry the message to the alcoholic or addict who still suffers. Its purpose is to encourage mutual support and cooperation of groups, individuals and their families in the rehabilitation of men and women of all ages who suffer from substance abuse and other addictive behaviors.

URS Club Background

In 1963, eleven men in recovery began meeting in a small store front on Southeast Stark Street. They were seeking a social atmosphere without intoxicants -- a place for support in recovery so they formed a club.

As more people joined, the club incorporated and moved into a larger facility. It became a coffee bar run entirely by volunteers and was a meeting hall hosting four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings each week.

As the club continued to develop as a supportive, social environment for people in recovery, more and more members joined. The club again relocated to a larger building and expanded in order to provide more services. By the mid-eighties, the URS Club was open 24 hours a day, offering more than twenty twelve-step meetings each week. Narcotics Anonymous meetings and women's groups were included in the schedule. The coffee bar expanded to a full-service restaurant and more social events were held at the club.

In December of 2002 the club moved to its current location. Although not a full-service restaurant any longer it is now a concession counter and coffee bar hosting more than 100 12-step meetings per week. The URS Club remains a supportive, social enviornment for people in recovery and is still independently supported by its members. The URS Club is still operated exclusively by people in recovery.
